This was such a good idea for a game! It's not often that we get Egyptian type horror games! The puzzles were fun to solve and I applaud you for the crazy plot twist at the end!! Very fun game!
Huge, huuuge thanks once again for playing my game, I left a comment, but I forgot to say - that thumbnail is better than the entire game lol - superb job friend. Cheers!
Hey Niven, first off, congrats for releasing Shunned. It's a pretty cool environment & mythos to explore in a videogame. I don't usually see many tackling this as an area so good design choice. Comparing it to the last game of yours I played (Primary Color Man) it is a noticeable step up (but PCM was a game jam game so you were limited by time so that's understandable).
Here we have a story, animation, characters, enemies, lore, and a combat mechanic. So I think you have clearly put in your work & tried something different this time.
I've read a lot of comments around the "crimson hallway" & that something should have happened here, but I am here to tell you I think it was executed well. If you remember when I played PCM I mentioned that atmosphere & playing on people's minds is just as scary as putting in a jumpscare. I think these days too many people go down the jumpscare route, and for that reason, the crimson hallway was perfect as is. I was constantly preparing myself for something to happen. The subtle water sounds & the ambiance made it pretty creepy as is, but not knowing what was coming was half the horror to me. So well done.
Lore was good & gave the player just enough info to know & wager a guess at what was going on. The intro and animations were good & fit well within the confines of the structure you were building. I liked the challenging nature of the spikes. I died way too many times so I need to get better lol.
I liked the combat at the end with regards to the mummies, that was neat, again fitting into the world & area you chose to expand upon. It all fits in nicely. I won't go into detail for the ending other than I wished it were longer, and I would have had it go slightly differently (if you are interested message me).
Some Feedback in case you plan to update the game: Clicking on notes and then clicking on another note before closing it will stack them. Clicking on the hieroglyphic puzzle pieces multiple times will play the audio repeatedly. Nothing else comes to mind, nothing game-breaking, so good job on that.
LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT GAME! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Wow! You continue making me feel special and super happy, I don't even consider thanking you as enough to show how much I love your reviews and your precious time for this - thank you Aaron, it means a world to me.
You are the only person, who understood me about the "Crimson Waters" and that's exactly what my intention was. I do realize, everyone has a different perspective on games, but seeing that professional approves it - man, I am smiling and happy for real now.
I guess this was a show off to those people, who might have caught PCM and did not know I was actually developing games before, yet, I do agree with you about this game being more in depth, it's my first time trying scripting all alone, creating my own animations and mixing them, so, hard work pays me the credit I guess.
The ending had more of a shock value, at least for those, who understand the lore behind that "Corporation", but I am very open to suggestions for sure. I will text you, of course.
Monumental thanks, once again for your time and can't wait to see your games sooner. Cheers man!
This was a pretty neat little game, although the red "hallway" part could use something more because nothing really happened there, but aside that it was good.
Huge thanks for playing this. I might do something with that "crimson hallway", but for now, based on the ending, it's obvious why nothing was happening there 😁. Cheers!
That was cool! I think the red corridor could've had something happen in the middle, to make the swimming more compelling. I found the story interesting and I liked the combination of modern technology & Egyptian tombs. Nice work! I did encounter a bug where I couldn't seem to fit the valve in the socket, then I died and it worked fine the second time.
[SPOILERS BELOW]
Is the story inspired by an already existing SCP? Or is it entirely original?
Thank you Mike for such a profound and kind feedback, I really appreciate that. Basically, without spoiling anything, the game does visually and verbally showcase what is really going on and everything after the end sequence makes sense, if you go back and replay the game, even the quite and more atmospheric "crimson waters" sequence. I did want to make that particular part more "scary", but then I thought it would not serve justice to the overall story. As for your question - it's both, kind of.
Played through and liked the vibe. I think the corridors where you're using the flares could've been spiced up with a scare or two and the ending fight might need some work, but I'll follow along and see what you come up with next!
Thanks for showcasing this on the channel. If you understand the ending of the game, the rest makes more sense, especially the fighting sequence, which is done like that on purpose and you going over the map at some point, which does not have invisible walls, also on purpose, it all makes sense. The game does not qualify for the "scare horror", as mentioned in the description it is more atmospheric and once again, from the ending, you can guess why are things the way they are. I won't be spoiling the game and explaining everything in this comment, but yeah, the game is not what is seems at first. Thanks again for the gameplay. Cheers!
Why do people in video games fly helicopters? They always crash. Still, it's a testament to the bravery of these fine men. Or... subjects. Who knows! Thanks for sharing this with us.
I know right? These so called "game developers" create a false narrative that flying is dangerous, when in fact, flying is the safest method of transportation. Those poor subjects... I mean men, I was meant to say men ...😶🤫.
Hi there, I am DragonExplosion and I am a Youtuber. If you like my videos, please leave a like and subscribe at my channel.
I am back again to try out one of Niven's games XD and I have to say that I enjoyed the game due to the variety of gameplay in the game. I enjoyed running around, learning about the story of the location, trying not to die from the incoming spikes, solving an egyptian puzzle and fighting mummies. The game provided a fulfilling experience for the player and I liked the red room in the game as well.
Some things about the game that I felt that could have been better is the puzzle part for the game as it would be more difficult for the player if they have to pick the exact object they have to put on the stand itself for the puzzle to be solved as currently, all I did was to just click on all the pressure plates to put the objects and the objects go their spots really quickly and easily. It would be cool if there were more puzzles in the game as well XD but thats not really an issue for the game. Other than that, I got stuck on the door near the end of the game somehow and had to restart the game so it would be cool if that get fixed. I wonder if the mummies are actually killable as well because I wasn't able to kill any of them while playing the game.
The ending for the game was amazing and unexpected, making me wonder if the main character is linked to the SCP Foundation as well as whether the main character actually went through the entire experience in reality.
Thank you for reading my comment and I wish you good luck in your future endeavours.
One of the best reviews I have gotten. Thank you friend. I did note the problem with the door, while watching the gameplay and it was an issue with the collision/hidden wall, that's why it happened. As for the puzzle, your feedback was very important. I tried to write a puzzle script for the first time, which involves some variables and you know, game developer stuff and this was my first try. I will make sure next time to have kind of a inventory system, which I do plan on doing with my other games.
And, as for the ending...I don't want to spoil information here so I wrote a comment on your channel 😉.
